icicle creek youth symphony

Partners in Education with Performing Arts Center of Wenatchee and Wenatchee Valley College

Icicle Creek Youth Symphony will begin its sixteenth year of providing high quality orchestral music instruction to elementary, middle school and high school student instrumentalists throughout the North Central Washington region. The program offers two full semesters and one optional quarter, Fall Semester, Winter Semester, and Spring Quarter, that parallel the school year. Students involved in the Icicle Creek Youth Symphony come from the Greater Wenatchee area, Leavenworth, Cashmere, Peshastin, Dryden, Quincy, and locations as far away as Twisp, Moses Lake and Ellensburg. This year we have the pleasure of partnering with Wenatchee Valley College as well for practice spaces. In the 2010-2011 school year, the program will be comprised of the following two ensembles:

Icicle Creek Youth Symphony Orchestra

Conducted by Music Director and Conductor Dan Jackson, the Icicle Creek Youth Symphony provides qualified students the opportunity to rehearse and perform substantial works from the Baroque period to the present in a full symphony orchestra. Comprised of student musicians from across the North Central Washington region and professional musicians and educators who serve as faculty coaches, the Icicle Creek Youth Symphony provides an intensive orchestral training ground for serious students of music. The Icicle Creek Youth Symphony Orchestra will rehearse Monday evenings from 4:00-6:30 PM in the Large Rehearsal Hall, Room 109, Music and Art Center, Wenatchee Valley College - 1510 9th Street, Wenatchee, WA 98801.

Icicle Creek Academy Orchestra

This ensemble is designed specifically for less experienced string players with limited or no previous orchestral training. The Academy Orchestra is open to students who have played one year or more and who read music. Students will learn fundamental string techniques and receive instruction in the principles of ensemble playing while preparing a selection of short pieces for performance. Ms. Kara Hunnicutt conducts the Academy Orchestra. The Icicle Creek Academy Orchestra will rehearse Monday evenings from 5:00-6:30 PM in Room 108, Music and Art Center, Wenatchee Valley College - 1510 9th Street, Wenatchee, WA 98801.

REHEARSALS & PERFORMANCES
Throughout the 2010-2011 season, both orchestras of the Icicle Creek Youth Symphony will rehearse in the Music and Art Center at Wenatchee Valley College, 1510 9th Street, Wenatchee, WA 98801. Dress Rehearsals and performances are onstage in Wenatchee's premier orchestral performance venue, the Performing Arts Center of Wenatchee at the Stanley Civic Center, located in the heart of downtown Wenatchee at 121 N. Wenatchee Avenue. Students should use the stage door entrance just off of Second Avenue. Orchestra members are expected to attend all designated rehearsals and performances and to arrive at least 15 minutes before the start of each rehearsal. Excessive lateness, poor attendance, disruptive behavior and/or lack of preparation may constitute grounds for suspension or dismissal from the program; any disciplinary measures will be at the discretion of the orchestra director.

URGENT CALL FOR PARENT VOLUNTEERS!

SCHOOL PARTICIPATION POLICY
Icicle Creek Youth Symphony students are required to participate in their school music programs wherever they exist*. This can be in whatever capacity the school may offer, be it choir, musical theater, band or orchestra.   ICYS requires its students to participate in at least one musical activity in school.   If you have any questions about this policy, please call the Music Center office at 509-548-6347.

*Those who are home schooled or who have extenuating circumstances should contact Dan Jackson, Music Director.

ICICLE CREEK SUMMER SYMPHONY
Scheduled for late June 2011, the summer session of the Youth Symphony, the Icicle Creek Summer Symphony, is an intensive orchestral experience for musicians of all levels held on the Icicle Creek Music Center campus.   Split into three divisions, the Icicle Creek Summer Symphony program features the Academy Orchestra, the Symphony Orchestra, and the Honors Chamber Orchestra.   The Academy Orchestra is an orchestral group for students just getting started on their instruments who have limited orchestral experience.   The Symphony Orchestra provides intensive orchestral rehearsal and performance techniques to intermediate and advanced players on standard symphonic repertoire.   The last division, the Honors Chamber Orchestra, is reserved for a select group of the most advanced orchestral players. It is designed to pair young, motivated musicians with professional players in both rehearsal and performance.

A Note from Sheila Hughes, Icicle Creek Music Center's Executive Director:

I wanted to share with you all a major change in leadership for our organization's Icicle Creek Youth Symphony. I am delighted to announce that the program, along with the Summer Symphony Program, will be led by Dan Jackson as Music Director and Conductor, whose work within the Wenatchee high school music program and our community's cultural profile will be well known to you all.  His work with the public school system, Woods House Conservatory, Wenatchee PAC, and Wenatchee Valley College puts him at the center of our region in this arena, and we feel incredibly lucky and honored that he would decide to make his next professional association with Icicle Creek Music Center.  We are also pleased to announce that Kara Hunnicutt will continue as conductor of the Academy Orchestra.

For all of you who worked so closely with Music Director and Conductor Jeremy Briggs Roberts, I know you'll join me with your warmest thanks and best wishes. While Jeremy is has made the decision to move on to new opportunities and an expanded role with the Washington Idaho Symphony in Pullman, his leadership and outstanding artistic contributions have made an indelible mark on Icicle Creek Music Center and to the young musicians in the Wenatchee Valley.  I hope to find opportunities to work with him in the future, and certainly to support his contributions to other music organizations throughout Washington State.  Jeremy's outstanding professionalism and high artistic ideals have set a bar for the organization that will continue to inspire and challenge us to excellence. Beyond that, I know that everyone at ICMC enjoyed working with Jeremy and wishes him the very best in his next adventures.

Sheila Hughes, Executive Director - Icicle Creek Music Center
