A Program of Icicle Creek Music Center
Situated in the beautiful foothills of the Cascade Mountains, Icicle Creek’s Summer Symphony program is held every year in the idyllic natural setting of the Icicle Creek Music Center campus, adjacent to the Sleeping Lady Mountain Resort in Leavenworth, Washington.
The Icicle Creek Summer Symphony 2010 program includes the following divisions:
Symphony and Chamber Orchestras An intensive week of orchestral rehearsal and performance conducted by Dr. Jeremy Briggs Roberts (B.A., University of Puget Sound; D.M.A, Orchestral Conducting, University of Washington). Dr. Briggs Roberts is Music Director and Conductor of the Icicle Creek Youth Symphony and Summer Symphony. A prizewinner at the Vendôme Academy of Orchestral Conducting in Paris, France, he has taught at the University of Washington School of Music, served as Associate Conductor of the Philharmonisches Kammerorchester Berlin, and has conducted opera and symphony orchestras in North America and Europe.
Summer Symphony Orchestra This full symphonic orchestra is designed for those with intermediate to advanced skills, typically students at an 8th grade-level and above, who have had at least two years of orchestral ensemble experience. Repertoire will be selected from the standard symphonic orchestral repertoire. Students will work in sectionals and in rehearsal with professional faculty to hone musical and technical skills throughout the week. The Symphony Orchestra provides an intensive orchestral training ground for serious students of music of all ages. 2010 repertoire for Summer Symphony Orchestra is: Bizet Carmen Suites - Selections and Mussorgsky - Night on Bald Mountain.
Summer Symphony Chamber Orchestra Based on a successful recorded audition as determined by the Music Director along with Summer Symphony faculty members, interested advanced-level participants, typically ages 16-23, will be selected to perform alongside Summer Symphony faculty members in a full-length concert as the Icicle Creek Summer Symphony Chamber Orchestra on Saturday night, June 26, 2010 at 7:30 PM at the beautiful Sleeping Lady Chapel located at the Sleeping Lady Mountain Resort in Leavenworth. Rehearsals for the Chamber Orchestra will be held in the Canyon Wren Recital Hall on the Icicle Creek Music Center campus every evening throughout the week of Summer Symphony. 2010 repertoire for Summer Symphony Chamber Orchestra is: Mozart Symphony No. 31 in D Major, "Paris", K 300a and Stravinsky - Pulcinella Suite. Please note that all members selected for participation in the Icicle Creek Chamber Orchestra must also participate in the Icicle Creek Symphony Orchestra.
Summer Symphony Academy Orchestra This orchestral group is for young players and students with limited orchestral experience and is a great way to learn skills essential for mastering playing an instrument in a conducted ensemble. The Academy Orchestra will be under the direction of Kara Hunnicutt (B.M., M.M., University of Southern California; M. Ed., Central Washington University). Ms. Hunnicutt is a freelance professional cellist and active studio teacher in North Central Washington. She teaches orchestra classes in Ellensburg, Washington, currently serves as principal cellist of the Yakima Symphony, and is the cellist of the Cascades Piano Trio. 2010 repetoire for Summer Symphony Academy Orchestra is Zoosters Breakout from the movie Madagascar, Variations on a Well Known Sea Chantey, Haydn's Surprise Symphony theme, and Saint-Saens' Carnival of the Animals: Elephant and Fossils.
Eligibility Icicle Creek’s Summer Symphony 2010 is open to students aged 8 to 23, who have played an orchestral instrument for at least one year. Bus service for local North Central Washington participants is provided between Wenatchee and the Icicle Creek campus in Leavenworth, Washington for a nominal fee.
Placement Auditions In order to facilitate placement into the proper ensemble for an enjoyable and challenging experience, all students interested in either Symphony Orchestra or Chamber Orchestra must send in an audition CD with their application. Those students applying for entrance into the Academy Orchestra need not send in a CD.
Academy Orchestra students (first, second, and third year string players) should prepare one scale of one or more octaves and part of one piece for auditions on Monday, June 21, 2010 during the first few minutes for the first day of camp.
Each student auditioning for Symphony Orchestra/Chamber Orchestra should be prepared to play the following based on individual instrument:
- Strings: One major and one minor scale (two octaves each for Symphony Orchestra, three octaves each for Chamber Orchestra placement) plus one 2-3 minute solo piece or excerpt displaying both musical ability and technical proficiency.
- Woodwinds/Brass: One major and one minor scale (two octaves each for both Symphony and Chamber Orchestra placement), one tongued and one slurred, plus one 2-3 minute solo piece or excerpt displaying both musical ability and technical proficiency.
- Percussion: A two-minute excerpt or solo piece on either xylophone, timpani, or snare drum displaying both musical ability and technical proficiency.
In addition to the pre-recorded CD, all students applying to Summer Symphony 2010 must be prepared to audition in person for the Summer Symphony faculty on Sunday June 20th. For this audition, prospective symphony and chamber orchestra students will be expected to audition on selected musical excerpts from the chosen concert repertoire. Ensemble assignments will be made on the basis of these auditions, with adjustments made during the first days of camp at the discretion of the faculty. An audition CD is REQUIRED containing the above audition requirements. Please NO cassette tapes or DVDs/Videotapes. You will be notified upon acceptance.

If you have home computer equipment, see the following instructions:
- Clearly print your full name, instrument, age, and private teacher on CD.
- Clearly print the contents of the CD on a piece of paper and include it with your registration form.
- Use an inexpensive external microphone (i.e. from Radioshack) and plug it in to the microphone jack on the back of your computer.
- You may need to adjust the sound options on your computer before you record. Make sure that the microphone is selected as the primary recording device, and that the recording volume is adjusted.
- Most computers come with simple recording software that records files in .WAV or .mp3 format. Record the audition requirements for your instrument and save the file on your computer.
- The CD burner software on your computer should be able to convert your .WAV or .mp3 file directly into an audio track on a blank CD-R disc.

Each section will include a professional faculty member, on hand at all rehearsals and sectionals, to provide detailed musical and technical assistance to participants.
